Xena the Conqueror F. A. Q:

Who is Xena the Conqueror? Is she related to Xena: Warrior Princess?

Xena the Conqueror made her first and only appearance on Hercules - The Legendary Journeys season four episode, "Armageddon Now". This was a two part episode which tied elements of the Xena: Warrior Princess storyline with the HTLJ storyline. In it, Callisto and Ares team up to free the Sovereign (an alternate universe Herc - an evil alternate universe Herc w/ a goatee, no less) from his interdimensional prison and take his Hind's Blood pendant (hind's blood can kill gods). They trap both Hercules and the Sovereign in the interdimenional prison and return back to "normal time". Callisto (with instruction from Hope -- the daughter of the evil god Dahak and Gabrielle (of Potidaea) ) betrays Ares and takes the Hind's blood pendant. With Hope's help (and instruction), Callisto travels back through time to kill Alcmene (Herc's mom) before Hercules is born. Meanwhile, Ares persuades Iolaus (Herc's best friend) to go after Callisto and the Hind's Blood pendant and stop her from murdering Alcmene. Iolaus fails in his task to stop Callisto from killing Alcmene and transports back to "normal time." It is here, in this altered timeline where Hercules never existed, where "Xena the Conqueror" makes her appearance. Essentially, Xena the Conqueror is the woman Xena: Warrior Princess would have become if Hercules were not there to help her turn the tide from being "evil" to "good". It is also in this alternate timeline where we meet Gabrielle. Here, she is not the bard that we know, but a dissident against the rule of Xena the Conqueror. In "Armageddon Now", Gabrielle is being crucified by Xena the Conqueror for inciting revolt against her rule.

So, Xena the Conqueror fan fiction explores this alternate timeline?

In a word, yes. There are variations on how each author explores this alternate timeline. Some Xena the Conqueror stories take their direction straight from the "Armageddon Now" plot and run from there. Others take a different approach and explore the notion of Xena as a powerful warlord and has little, if anything to do with the "Armageddon Now" plot. The types and varieties of Xena the Conqueror fan fiction is as varied as the authors who write them. The unifying theme of what makes a "Xena the Conqueror" story is the idea that Xena: Warrior Princess has gone on to conquer kingdoms and has become a powerful ruler/ warlord (i.e. Xena the Conqueror). Another unifying theme in many Xena the Conqueror stories is the presence of Gabrielle. In many cases, it is Gabrielle that helps this alternate timeline Xena change her path from "evil" to "good".

Do you have a clip of Armageddon Now showing the Xena the Conqueror and Gabrielle scene?

Why yes, I do. It is an .avi file that is about 19 MB. Click on the link below to download the file:

Who wrote the first Xena the Conqueror fan fiction story?

Katrina (aka Bearblue) wrote the first Xena the Conqueror fan fiction story back in February 1998. The story was entitled, "The Storyteller". Katrina is, literally, the founding mother of this sub-genre of Xena fan fiction.

This website is...?

Dedicated to keeping track of any and all Xena the Conqueror stories that have appeared on the internet. It is, in essence, a link list of (one hopes) practically every single Xena the Conqueror story that's ever made its way online. Think of it like a one-stop shop for all your Xena the Conqueror needs. I created this website in November of 1998 with the idea of keeping track of XTC (Xena the Conqueror) stories. Please note that this site only keeps track of "classic" Conqueror stories -- that is, Xena the Conqueror stories set in the time frame of "ancient times" -- akin to the time frame of XWP (excluding modern uber settings) and must contain either Xena the Conqueror or Gabrielle the Conqueror as part of the story. Although one or two stories make reference to "modern times", the bulk of any Conqueror stories listed on the index must take place in the "long ago and far away" setting of "classic" XWP and XWP related stories. This Xena the Conqueror site does not index uber, uberesque, or "modern times" Conqueror stories.

Hey! All of these stories are filled with smut, violence, and kinky sex. You're going straight to hell.

There's a reason why there are "BACK" buttons on web browsers, sweetie. Why read what you don't like or disagree with? Life's too short. And don't bother telling me you hate Xena the Conqueror stories. What in the world are you doing HERE if you hate XTC stories, anyway? By the way, have you read the DISCLAIMERS? No? Well, here they are again. Pay attention this time.

What's this "Gabrielle the Conqueror" fan fiction stories about, then? I thought this was "Xena the Conqueror" ?

Think of it like a sub-genre within a sub-genre. Gabrielle the Conqueror stories turn the premise around -- instead of Xena as a conquering warlord, it's Gabrielle.

So, this site keeps track of both types -- Xena the Conqueror and Gabrielle the Conqueror?

Yup.

Who wrote the first "Gabrielle the Conqueror" story?

I have no idea. Funny, that. Why not ask Lunacy? She might know.

What's this "Headquarters of the Basement of Xena fan fiction" stuff?

Back in May of 2001, an article appeared in Whoosh! Magazine talking about the various types of Xena fan fiction. The article writer characterized Xena the Conqueror stories as "the basement of Xena fiction". Since the AOC (Annals of the Conqueror) keeps track of XTC stories, I decided to subtitle the site, Headquarters of the "Basement of Xena fan fiction". The full quote from the article can be seen further down this page under, "Inspirational Quote".

Huh? I don't get it?

The Xena the Conqueror sub-genre of Xena fan fiction is one of the most maligned of all of the types of fan fiction in Xena fandom. People have strong points of views about Xena the Conqueror fan fiction -- mainly due to its frank depictions of both sex and violence. Many people hold negative views about it and form opinions concerning it although they've never read more than one or two stories. Given the different varieties and types of Xena the Conqueror fan fiction, I've always felt that painting the entire sub-genre as "the worst of the worst" is at best, foolish and at worst, ignorant and narrow-minded. The Whoosh! quote perfectly encapsulates the general "surface" view of what Xena the Conqueror stories are and are about. It seemed strangely appropriate to add the quote to the website.

What is hotlinking?

Bandwidth theft. Hotlinking or direct linking is when you link to images/files on a server/website other than your own. When you hotlink, you steal bandwidth from someone else's site. Website owners PAY for space and bandwidth, so when you hotlink, you are stealing from the website owner. Website owners are charged extra fees if they go over the amount of bandwidth that is given to them and that's why site owners detest hotlinking/ direct linking -- you're causing them to pay a fine because you're stealing bandwidth that they are PAYING for and is only supposed to be for their own use.

To avoid hotlinking or direct linking, save the image to your own computer and upload the image to YOUR OWN server or webspace. A good place to store images if you don't have your own webspace is photobucket: (http://photobucket.com)

The webmaster of this site no longer participates/ is active/ has interest in Xena fandom. This website remains on the internet as a courtesy to those in Xena fandom who may have use for it. However, it will be updated whenever a new addition to the Xena the Conqueror genre is posted on the web. This website remains on the internet as a courtesy to those in the fandom who may have use for it. Please also note that the webmaster is paying for both space and bandwidth for this website and will try the utmost to keep this website online as long as possible.

Hordes of Conqueror addicts were added on a daily basis to the growing rolls before the counter surrendered its will to the majesty that is Xena the Conqueror and dissolved in the blindng warmth of her glorious presence.

With Lady Fortune's benevolent blessing, the counter lives once again, small but ever growing in number. All hail Xena the Conqueror. May the millions thousands who live under her reign prosper and thrive.

Inspirational Quote :

from the May 2001 Issue #56 of Whoosh! (http://whoosh.org/issue56/tracy1a.html#appen1) :

" Conqueror Stories

[47] The basement of Xena fiction is the Conqueror story. When Lucy Lawless first played the Xena character, Xena was an evil b*tch. She was out to kill Hercules and mount his head as a trophy outside her tent. Instead, Hercules turned her into a warrior for good. Initially, Xena was suppose to be killed off at the end of a three episode arc, just like all of Herc's other women, but the response to the Lawless character was so positive they gave her a series of her own. Conqueror stories presume Xena stayed a b*tch, conquers all of Greece, murders people for no reason, and rapes innocent maidens. Enter Gabrielle.

[48] There are really only two kinds of Conqueror stories. In the nice ones, Xena gets drunk, debauches Gabrielle silly, sobers up, and notices there is something different about this kid. We then have a variation on redemption myth mentioned above. In the nasty ones, Xena never notices anything special about Gabrielle and turns her into a sex slave. I oversimplify, but not by much.
